Worship

8:30am & 10:45am

Worship is the "Heart Beat" of our life together at St. Luke's!  It is a time to celebrate God's presence in our lives, through scripture, music, prayer, the sacraments and the word.  As God's people we gather with grateful hearts to replenish our spirits, nourish our souls, celebrate our faith and offer our lives to The One who gave life!

Sunday School

Fellowship Class:  organized shortly after St. Luke’s was formed, is for adults, both single and married.  Our lessons come from Cokesbury, the Methodist Publishing House.  Annually, special studies for Christmas and Easter seasons are held.  The class meets in the Ben Davis Room.

Genesis Class:  made up of single adults and couples (ages 30 and older) who strongly believe that you are as young as you feel.  This class enjoys fellowship activities and is involved in community outreach programs.

Sarah Class:  The Sarah Sunday School Class is a discussion/study group for ladies in the church.  Issues of particular interest to women are explored using resources such as the Bible, curriculum materials, and/or other contemporary writings.

Children's Classes:  Wonderful teachers bring life to quality Sunday school curriculum.

Youth:  Youth meet at 9:30 a.m. each Sunday morning in Youth rooms located near the gym.

History

In early 1958, the Shreveport District Board of Missions wanted to start a church in a growing area of Shreveport.  A parsonage at 255 Roma Drive was made available and Tracy Arnold was appointed to start the new church.  The first meeting place was the Broadmoor Theater, while Sunday School classes were held in the Scout Huts at the A.C. Steere Park.  Rev. Arnold had to carry in a portable pulpit, hymnals, and lights hooked up to an extension cord.  Since there was no baptismal font, the first baptism was performed using a paper cup.  The new church was chartered on September 21, 1958.  By the end of the year, there were 101 charter members.

In November 1958, St. Luke's began holding services at Brown Chapel at Centenary.  Land for a church site at 6312 Sand Beach Blvd was purchased on January 8, 1959.  Ground breaking on the new church was on May 14, 1961.  By March 1962, the construction was completed.  An addition was built in 1968. A new wing and a flexible activity/classroom was built in 1976-77.The sanctuary was renovated in 1977-78. Finally, in 2008, the chancel area was renovated.
