The Pumpkin Patch at St. Luke’s was begun in 1990, as a way to raise funds for missions. Since that time, over $155,000 has been donated to missions near and far from the proceeds of The Patch. Pumpkins are provided by a farmer, Richard Hamby, who leases acreage from the Navajo Reservation in northwestern New Mexico. This area is particularly suited to the growing of pumpkins. Native Americans are also given jobs in the growing and processing of the crop. Mr. Hamby began supplying pumpkins to churches and other non-profit organizations thirty-one years ago for fundraisers and now he and his company supply over 1300 locations, including more than thirty denominations in forty-eight states.
St. Luke’s has become known as “the PumpkinPatchChurch” on Youree. Many families visit The Patch for a family outing, photos and, of course, beautiful pumpkins and other related items. Hundreds of kindergartners from local schools are entertained by a visit to The Patch each year.
This year (2010) the pumpkins are scheduled to arrive on Sunday, October 3rd and the patch will be open from Sunday, October 3rd until Sunday, October 31st.
